- LETTERS, Page 6India's Dynamic Middle Class
-
- In your story on India's rising prosperity (WORLD, Nov.
- 13), V.A. Pai Panandiker, director of New Delhi's Center for
- Policy Research, predicts that in ten years about 300 million
- Indians will be members of the middle class. However, the
- majority of that class in no way measures up to the lowest level
- of the middle class in the U.S. Furthermore, it is nearly
- certain that the jarring juxtaposition of those living below the
- poverty line (about a third of the country's 835 million people)
- and the "consumer-happy middle class" will eventually result in
- a revolution as the poor strive to improve their own sad
- economic state.
